How Do They Work?

The Different Types of Braces

Traditional Braces

If you have any crowded teeth, crooked teeth, misaligned bites, and jaw problems, traditional braces can be used to realign them. You will need periodic adjustment and tightening of your braces to gradually change your teeth and jaw alignment as necessary. Braces are usually worn for about 2 years.

Similar to traditional braces in shape and size, brackets of ceramic braces are made of either tooth-coloured or transparent ceramic. They are more expensive than metal braces and the brackets can stain easily if not properly cared for.

1. Initial Consultation

Your first visit will cover:

  • X-rays & 3D Scanning to analyze your teeth and create a personalized treatment plan

2. Treatment Discussion

After X-rays and 3D scanning, we will:

  • discuss our findings with you
  • present the different treatment options available.

3. Bracket Bonding

After you’ve decided on a treatment option, we will begin the process by bonding brackets onto your teeth. These brackets serve as anchors for the braces and allow us to gradually move your teeth into the desired positions.

4. Regular Adjustment Visits

Throughout your treatment, we’ll schedule regular visits every 4 to 6 weeks for adjustments. During these visits, we will make necessary modifications to the braces to continue guiding your teeth into their correct alignment. These adjustments ensure steady progress towards your beautiful smile.

5. Retainers for Maintenance

Once your teeth have achieved the desired alignment, we’ll complete the treatment by providing retainers. Retainers help maintain the position of your newly aligned teeth and protect your investment in a beautiful smile.

Invisalign clear aligners are a popular alternative to traditional braces for straightening your teeth. They are virtually invisible when worn, removable, comfortable, and specifically designed to gradually move your teeth into the desired positions.

I’ve heard braces cause ulcers, is this true?

Braces commonly cause ulcers as the brackets may rub against the tissue inside your mouth. To make braces more comfortable, orthodontic wax is recommended to reduce the friction inside your mouth. This will help reduce the incidence of ulcers.

What are the different components of traditional braces and what do they do?

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets attached to your teeth with dental adhesive and connected by the archwire. Ligatures refer to the small elastic bands around each bracket, which secure the wire in place. These come in many colors and can be mixed and matched to give you a colorful smile while you get your teeth straightened! Clear elastics are also available to help your braces be more discreet. Rubber bands that connect your top and bottom rows of teeth may also be used with traditional braces. While the brackets, ligatures, and wire move your teeth along the gum line, rubber bands are responsible for shifting your jaw into alignment if they are misaligned. They can also help to speed up the process of shifting your teeth.

 

When are traditional braces preferred over Invisalign?

If your case requires the extraction of teeth (usually in order to make space for your teeth to be repositioned), traditional braces would be more effective.
Also, the effectiveness of Invisalign is heavily dependent on the conscientiousness of the user. If the user does not follow the recommended guidelines (e.g., repeatedly forgetting to put on Invisalign after meals or removing Invisalign for an extended period of time), Invisalign would be less effective compared to traditional braces. This is why we recommend traditional braces for younger patients.

 

How do i care for my braces?

You should steer clear of foods that are hard, crunchy, or sugary. Sugary foods can lead to plaque buildup around your braces, which could either stain or damage your teeth permanently.

Brushing your teeth with braces is similar to when you are without braces.

These are the general guidelines:

  1. Brush at least twice a day
  2. Brush for 2 full minutes
  3. Replace your toothbrush at least once every 3 months
  4. Brush all surfaces of your teeth

However, some extra care is needed for cleaning between teeth, as the archwire makes it slightly challenging. We recommend using an interdental brush, which is available at our dental clinic. It is a thin brush between 0.7mm and 1.00mm that fits between your teeth to help you keep them clean on all surfaces. An alternative method that will help keep the space between your teeth clean is using a floss threader to help guide the floss between your teeth while you floss.
