Flexi-MediSave for permanent crowns and root canal treatment: age 60+, shared annual S$400 limit

Flexi-MediSave can be used for selected restorative dental procedures: permanent crowns and root canal treatment. It gives eligible older patients another way to use their MediSave savings towards these treatments, subject to the scheme rules, available savings and remaining annual withdrawal limit.

Who can use Flexi-MediSave?

CPF describes Flexi-MediSave as available to members aged 60 and above. Patients may use their own MediSave, or their spouse’s MediSave if the spouse is also aged 60 and above. The clinic should check eligibility and authorisation before a claim is submitted.

This differs from some other MediSave schemes. Do not assume that an adult child’s MediSave can be used under Flexi-MediSave simply because another scheme permits payments for approved dependants.

Which dental treatments are included?

The selected procedures are permanent crowns and root canal treatments. A permanent dental crown covers a tooth when the dentist finds that this restoration is appropriate. Root canal treatment treats problems affecting the tissue inside a tooth; the dentist assesses whether it is suitable and discusses alternatives.

Flexi-MediSave does not cover every dental service. Routine cleaning, whitening, braces, clear aligners and dentures should not be described as eligible under this dental extension. Surgical dental procedures may fall under separate MediSave rules; their limits should not be confused with Flexi-MediSave.

What does the S$400 annual limit mean?

The limit is up to S$400 per patient per year. It is shared across eligible Flexi-MediSave outpatient expenses, including medical and dental use. It is not S$400 per tooth, per procedure or per clinic visit.

For example, a patient who has already used S$150 of their annual Flexi-MediSave limit would have up to S$250 of that limit remaining, subject to eligibility and available savings. Using a spouse’s account does not create an additional annual limit for the same patient.

MediSave is the member’s healthcare savings. Flexi-MediSave is a withdrawal scheme, not a cash grant or discount, and the maximum limit does not guarantee that the full amount can be claimed.

How is this different from CHAS?

CHAS provides subsidies for eligible Singapore Citizens and eligible treatments. Flexi-MediSave allows eligible MediSave savings to be withdrawn. These are different financing arrangements. A clinic should check any applicable CHAS subsidy, the bill remaining and the amount eligible for a MediSave claim without promising that every patient will receive both.

See our CHAS and MediSave guide for broader information. This article focuses on permanent crowns and root canal treatment rather than repeating the full subsidy guide.

What should patients check before treatment?

  • Whether the proposed treatment is an eligible permanent crown or root canal procedure.
  • Whether the clinic is accredited to submit the relevant Flexi-MediSave dental claim.
  • The patient’s eligibility, available MediSave savings and remaining annual limit.
  • Whose MediSave account will be used and the required authorisation.
  • The written treatment estimate, any applicable CHAS subsidy and the remaining payment arrangements.

Please bring the identification and relevant CHAS, Merdeka Generation or Pioneer Generation card requested by the clinic. Do not send NRIC details or account screenshots through a general enquiry message.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim S$400 for a crown and another S$400 for root canal treatment?
No. The annual limit applies to each patient and is shared across eligible Flexi-MediSave expenses.

Can I use my spouse’s MediSave?
CPF permits this if the spouse is also aged 60 and above, subject to the relevant authorisation, savings and the patient’s remaining annual limit.

Does being 60 or older make all dental work claimable?
No. The dental extension covers selected permanent crown and root canal procedures. It does not make every dental treatment eligible.

Is this the same as surgical MediSave for implants?
No. Dental surgery is assessed under separate rules and withdrawal limits. Do not apply the Flexi-MediSave S$400 limit to an implant surgery claim.
