Black Triangle Treatment in Singapore

Have you noticed small triangular gaps appearing between your teeth, near the gumline? These are commonly known as “black triangles” — and if they’ve started to bother you when you smile, you’re not alone. They’re one of the more common cosmetic concerns we see, and in many cases they can be improved without crowns, veneers, or surgery.

This page explains what black triangles are, why they form, and how we treat them at Garden Dental using the Bioclear Method.

What are Black Triangles?

A black triangle (clinically, an open gingival embrasure) is the small dark gap that can appear between two teeth, just below the contact point and above the gumline. When the gum tissue doesn’t completely fill the space between adjacent teeth, the gap reads as a tiny dark triangle — most visible between the front teeth.

They aren’t a sign that something is wrong with the health of your teeth. For most people, the concern is cosmetic: black triangles can trap food and, understandably, many people feel self-conscious about how they look.

What causes Black Triangle?

Black triangles usually develop for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Gum recession. As gums recede — often with age or gum disease — the tissue that once filled the space between teeth pulls back, opening a gap.
  • After orthodontic treatment. As teeth are moved into alignment with braces or Invisalign, previously overlapping or crowded teeth separate. This can reveal a black triangle that the crowding had hidden. (See our pages on braces and Invisalign.)
  • Tooth shape. Teeth that are more triangular than rectangular meet at a narrow contact point high up, leaving more open space below it.
  • Bone and gum changes over time. Loss of the bone and gum height between teeth — including from periodontal (gum) disease — reduces the support that fills the space.

Because the causes differ, the right approach starts with an assessment of why the black triangle has formed in your particular case.

How we treat black  triangles — the Bioclear Methods

At Garden Dental we treat black triangles using the Bioclear Method, a composite resin technique that uses a clear, anatomically-shaped mylar matrix (mould) placed between and around the teeth.

Warmed, flowable tooth-coloured composite is injected into the matrix so that it flows fully into the gap and is shaped to meet the gumline. The result is a smooth, sealed contour between the teeth that closes the triangular space and is shaped to look natural.

Because the technique builds up the tooth with composite rather than cutting it down, it is generally a minimally invasive option that, in many cases, does not require the removal of healthy tooth structure.

Bicoclear Method vs. – Veneers

Veneers are another way to change the shape and appearance of teeth, and in some situations they may be the more suitable choice. The main practical differences:

Category Bioclear method Veneers
Material Tooth-coloured composite resin Porcelain (usually)
Tooth preparation Often minimal or none Usually some enamel removed
Best suited to Closing black triangles, reshaping contours Broader changes to shape, colour, alignment

Which option suits you depends on your goals and the condition of your teeth. We’ll talk you through both. You can read more on our veneers page.

Is the Bioclear Method right for me?

The Bioclear Method may be a suitable option if you:

  • Have one or more black triangles you’d like to close, particularly between the front teeth
  • Have developed gaps after braces or Invisalign
  • Would prefer an approach that, where possible, preserves healthy tooth structure
  • Have healthy gums, or have had any active gum disease treated and stabilised first

It may not be the right starting point if there is untreated gum disease or decay — these are usually addressed first. The clearest way to know is an in-person assessment.

What to expect at your appointment

  1. Assessment. We examine the teeth and gums, identify why the black triangle has formed, and check that the gums are healthy enough to proceed.
  2. Discussion of options. We explain whether the Bioclear Method, veneers, or another approach best fits your situation, along with what each involves.
  3. Treatment. If you proceed with Bioclear, the teeth are cleaned and isolated, the matrices are placed, and the composite is shaped and set. Many cases are completed in one or a small number of visits.
  4. Finishing. The composite is polished to a smooth, natural-looking finish.
  5. Aftercare. We show you how to clean around the treated area and advise on routine reviews.

Browse Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What exactly is a black triangle?

It’s the small dark gap that can appear between two teeth near the gumline, when gum tissue doesn’t fully fill the space between them. The clinical term is an open gingival embrasure.

Are black triangles harmful?

They’re generally a cosmetic concern rather than a health problem, though the gaps can trap food. If a black triangle is related to gum disease, the underlying gum condition is what needs attention.

Does the Bioclear Method damage my teeth?

The technique adds composite to the teeth rather than cutting them down, so in many cases it can be done without removing healthy tooth structure. Your dentist will confirm what’s appropriate for your teeth.

How long do the results last?

Composite restorations are durable but, like all dental work, can wear or stain over time and may need maintenance or touch-ups. Good oral hygiene and routine reviews help them last.

Can black triangles come back after treatment?

The treated area is filled, but ongoing gum recession or gum disease can affect the surrounding teeth, so keeping your gums healthy is important.

Will it be covered by insurance?

Cosmetic treatment is often not covered, but this depends on your individual plan. We can provide the information you need to check with your insurer.
